MovingWorlds 2016 Annual Impact Report and Infographic

Our two-fold mission is the same it was when we started out 5 years ago: to get expertise to the parts of the world that need it most by mobilizing professionals to give what they’re good at, and in the process, connect them to world-positive, life-enriching experiences.

This means that we work hard every day building international partnerships and developing a world-class platform that efficiently connects local impact organizations to skilled volunteers, and then guides both parties through a complete readiness and preparation process.

2016 was our most impactful year yet, as we received national attention for our new MovingWorlds Institute, expanded our corporate partnerships – officially launching new programs with Siemens Stiftung and with the Kering Foundation – while continuing to see a consistent increase in memberships on our open Experteering platform.

In 2016 we also took center stage for our thought leadership on how skills-based volunteers are helping achieve global development goals and how corporations can optimize their volunteering programs to achieve leadership development outcomes, and create corporate philanthropy programs that actually create change.

More important than all the media buzz is the impact we’re making in the field. This past year we supported Experteers from over 43 different countries who worked on impact-generating projects across 47 different countries, contributing to the over $7 Million USD worth of skills having been Experteered to date, almost half of which we generated this year.

As an example, Kelly Goebel is a Canadian engineer with 20+ years of experience in the oil, mining, and infrastructure sector. He joined MovingWorlds in hopes of making a positive impact with a mission-driven organization, while at the same time allowing him to develop more strategic and ‘soft’ business skills. We connected him to Tenoli, a Mexican social enterprise that helps micro-enterprises (like the classic small neighborhood store) grow sustainably through training and innovative models, making them better equipped to compete with big chain stores moving across the region, and in the process, keeping better paying local jobs. After initially volunteering his skills with Tenoli for four months, they decided to extend his time with the company for 6 more months. You can read Kelly’s full Experteering story on the MovingWorlds Blog.

2016 Impact Statistics

The below infographic represents our Experteering numbers and impact for 2016:

Developing New Ways for Global Partners to Build Capacity

This last year we worked hard to expand our partnership abilities to better support umbrella organizations that directly work with social impact organizations in the field. Groups like social enterprise incubators, accelerators, impact investors, venture philanthropists and co-working hubs widely report that a lack of access to skills and talent is a major barrier to supporting their partners in the field. By focusing on access to non-financial support and transferring knowledge, MovingWorlds is effectively supporting our partners’ portfolios of already vetted organizations by connecting them to top talent.

Some of our newest partners include Siemens Stiftung, Agora Partnerships, Socialab, ThinkImpact, Thomson Reuters Foundation, SistemaB, and Endeavor to name just a few.

Building a Global Experteering Movement with Corporate Partners

Our partnerships with global corporations enable us to help unleash some of the world’s highest skilled employees to contribute their time and talents to social good projects. Programs like Microsoft’s MySkills4Afrika and Kering’s Solidarity Leave prove that employees develop global leadership skills while helping make an impact abroad through Experteering. With representatives coming from over 15 countries impacting organizations in 23, our corporate programs positively contribute to our impact, and to the impact of our partners.

Rossella is head of CSR at Gucci, she is based in Florence took Solidarity Leave in August 2016. She offered her help to an Indonesian NGO called Makarios Kreasindo.

Our innovative approach to supporting corporate programs has been picked up by Fast Company, DEVEX, and Stanford’s Social Innovation Review, and we took the stage at the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Corporate Citizenship Conference to share how corporations can easily incorporate skills-based volunteering into global expansion, leadership development, product innovation, and staff recruitment and retention program – we look forward to further expanding our corporate programming to make Experteering available to even more people in 2017!

Providing Transformative Learning with the NEW MovingWorlds Institute

In 2016, we announced a new program designed to help skilled professionals make a positive impact with their career, whether they’re looking for a new job or staying at their company. The response for the MovingWorlds Institute was through the roof with international attention from Fast Company, Devex, Idealist, Next Billion, and many more.

The first class of Fellows was announced in December 2016 and is nothing short of inspiring! Coming from 6 countries, our Fellows span across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, represent 12 different global industries, have a combined 140 years of professional experience, and, most importantly, share a common vision of using their skills to find a career that makes them and the world better.

Scaling Our Impact in 2017

As we move into 2017, we see an increased interest in meaningful travel and Experteering from individuals, corporations, and global development organizations. We are more optimistic than ever about the Experteering movement and the opportunities ahead. We see the growing field as an opportunity rather than a threat, and will actively invest in contributing to the sector through the Pro Bono Network as an active member. We foresee a significant growth of both memberships and projects on our platform, and in tandem we’ll start piloting new types of Experteering programs. And, as the core of our innovation, we’ll continue to invest in further developing the world’s leading international skills-based volunteering matching and support platform to provide our users with better service that creates better outcomes.

Yours in moving worlds,
Derk, Mark, and the entire MovingWorlds Team!
